What Is A Dental Crown?
A dental crown can be described as a covering or cap that goes around a tooth. A natural tooth has two sections. The section above the gum is a called a clinical crown and the section the below the gum is called a root. When a clinical crown becomes damaged, discoloured or weak due to a large and multiple restorations a new casing or cap can be made to fit over the remaining tooth and this is called a crown.

What Are Crowns Made Of?
Most crowns today are usually made of zirconia and porcelain. The structural base is zirconia and the front is porcelain baked to the zirconia. The process requires moulding and matching the cap to the rest of your teeth to make it the right shape and colour so that it looks as natural as possible.
Sometimes crowns are made out of a metal cap with porcelain veneers. They are called PFM (porcelain fused to metal) or VMK. Temporary crowns are made out of resin and last only a few months. In the past, teeth were capped with full metal crowns out of gold, gold alloys or other metals.
What Is Required For Crowns?
In most cases, patients need a one to two-hour initial appointment depending on the degree of difficulty. To do a crown requires an impression to be taken and a temporary crown is made from plastic and glued on with a soft temporary glue. This is all done at the initial appointment and allows you to eat properly and it looks like your other teeth. The impression is given to a ceramist in Brisbane and a crown is fabricated in about two weeks. The crown is then cemented at the final appointment.
